On Infant Mortality - Global Progress against a personal tragedy
Starting in 1994 there were 20 countries with Infant Mortality rates less than 5 per thousand births. In 2016 there were 58 countries with Infant Mortality rates less than 5 per thousand births. According to the WHO, Infant Mortality rates are falling all over the world due to increased facility births (approximately 80% of births occur in a hospital or a similar facility), however, despite that progress "the vast majority of newborn deaths takes place in low and middle-income countries. It is possible to improve survival and health of newborns and end preventable stillbirths by reaching high coverage of quality antenatal care, skilled care at birth, postnatal care for mother and baby, and care of small and sick newborns."
The countries that have gotten into the low range include:
Antigua and Barbuda Austria Belarus Cuba [Note that Cuba is the only third-world country on this list] Cyprus Estonia Finland France Germany Iceland Ireland Israel Italy Japan Luxembourg Malta Monaco Montenegro New Zealand Norway San Marino Singapore Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Czech Republic Republic of Korea Slovak Republic United Kingdom United States
